Second Symposium on XIXth Century German Philosophy

Second Symposium on XIXth Century German Philosophy. “Copernican Turns”

Date: 16-18 October 2023

Venue: online

Organizing Committee: Jacinto Páez, Laura Pelegrín, Fernando Turri

Sponsoring Institutions: Grupo de Estudios Kantianos (UBA)

Following the path opened with the symposium “The Era of Neo-Kantianism” in 2021, this second symposium on German Philosophy of the 19th century aims to discuss the meaning, validity and limits of the “Copernican turn” initiated by Kant.

From the very beginning of the reception of critical philosophy in Reinhold's works until the emergence of neo-Kantian systems at the end of the nineteenth century, the premise of the “Copernican turn” in philosophy operated as a popular trope. At the same time, philosophical discussion itself promoted the idea that such a turn had not been implemented in a fully coherent way by Kant himself. The existence of metaphysical overtones in his work became a yardstick for measuring the concrete realization of the critical project. And also the index of the necessary corrections to which the project of a transcendental philosophy had to be subjected.

On this occasion, the purpose of our meeting is to discuss different interpretations of the “Copernican Turn” that emerged during the 19th century. The aim of our discussions will be to understand and evaluate the various interpretations of this turn and the projection that the nineteenth-century debates have for the understanding of contemporary philosophy. The symposium will not be limited exclusively to the problem of the theory of knowledge but to the various interpretations of the Copernican turn in philosophy in general.

The event is organized as an activity of the Permanent Seminar on Idealism and Neo-Kantianism of the Kantian Studies Group (gekenglishversion.blogspot.com)
